Les nombreux manuscrits parvenus, depuis l’époque carolingienne, jusqu’à nos jours, attestent par leurs variantes une certaine diversité de traditions coexistant, dès avant l’invention de la notation musicale, dans l’Europe médiévale. L’étude des variantes tonales, modales ou ornementales, soient-elles volontaires ou involontaires, invite à faire une distinction entre des erreurs, ou d’authentiques choix de copistes, témoins de préférences locales ou culturelles. Les interprétations, intellectuelles et musicales, de ces chants bénéficieront de cette riche diversité, plus que de la réduction à une uniformité sans ancrage dans l’histoire. The chants of the latin Church were transmitted orally from the beginning until the ninth century. A number of variants, which can be spotted in the manuscripts which were preserved from the Carolingian ages, show the diversity of coexistant traditions in the medieval Europe, even before the invention of musical notations.
